Luke 16

Jesus tells a story about a dishonest manager. Notice that the point of the story is important. Don't get caught up in the details or you will think that God wants you to be dishonest.  What God does want (That is, the point – or, maybe, you can come up with another. Parables are somewhat open ended) is shrewd disciples. That is, followers who use all their talents and persistence to work for His good. Ultimately, everything we have really is God's. We should live accordingly, investing our lives shrewdly and with gusto to bring his Kingdom into reality. We have a choice – serve God with our lives or serve ourselves. We can only pick one. Each day, each action must be for God. God gives more to those who are faithful.

God examines our hearts. We can look religious but we can really be out for number one, not for God. Jesus points out that the rules of God are not suspended, only that the rules are meaningless in the hands of those who really only care about themselves. Rules can be manipulated. Dedication to God cannot. The Rich Man story points out the gulf we can create between us and life when we love this world and its wealth more than God. There are consequences to the love of wealth.
