Luke 14

Religious people are still watching Jesus, especially on the day of rest, the Sabbath.

Jesus does not answer law questions as much as he shows that mercy (healing) is what God wants on any day.

Jesus reminds people not to think too highly of themselves. God judges all the same. Only people make up rules of importance for people. The higher we aspire the farther we will fall. Remember that humility is thinking about ourselves "just right" and not having poor self esteem. Each of us should be passionate about the special person God made in us. God loves humble people.

Make the outcasts of your world the ones you pour attention on. That's very different from conventional wisdom where we suck up to rich and powerful people.

Jesus' parable about a feast shows that "important people" have all sorts of excuses for delaying their relationship to God.  God seems to say that he will take ANYONE. Yet, God still keeps his expectations of his children high. Disciples accept the high cost of following Jesus. Than can mean that even family will not understand. We need to see ourselves as related by more than just blood we are all related by Jesus' blood shed for all of us. Disciples know the costs of discipleship and the rewards are high.
